Shorter Catechism Illustration:  He initiated a covenant of grace

Sometimes there were more kings than one in Sparta, who governed by joint authority. A king was occasionally sent to some neighboring senate as a Spartan ambassador. Did he, when so sent, cease to be a king of Sparta, because he was also an ambassador? No; he did not divest himself of his regal dignity, but only added to it that of public deputation. So Christ, in becoming man, did not cease to be God; but though He ever was, and still continued to be, King of the whole creation, He acted as the voluntary servant and messenger of the Father. — John Whitecross, 1828

Shorter Catechism Scriptures

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.                               — 1 Timothy 2:5, 6

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law.   — Galatians 4:4

Next week we will answer Shorter Catechism Q. 22:  How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?

A.  Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking to Himself a true body, and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and born of her, yet without sin.

Visiting? Leave us a note.  Please fill out the top sheet of the register in your pew, and place it in the collection plate when it is passed, or give it to one of the ushers later. Include your email address with your contact information and anything else you would like the pastor to know.

A new class on the Heidelberg Catechism will begin next Lord’s day evening, at 6 p.m., to be led by John Stallings.

The Shorter Catechism class that meets at 9 each Sabbath morning is for adults and teenagers wishing to begin a systematic basic study. New students may begin at any time, but currently the class is just starting at the beginning of the catechism.

The catechism is beneficial to study because it presents in a summarized way the basic teachings of the Bible, particularly those most necessary for a coherent understanding of the faith. Pastor Edwin P. Elliott, Jr., leads the class. For more information, contact him at pastor@rpchurch.org .
