Shorter Catechism Illustration:
They must examine themselves
During the ministry of Andrew Gray at Glasgow, William Guthrie of
Fenwick on one occasion assisted him at the dispensation of the Lord’s
Supper. Some of Cromwell’s officers, then in Glasgow, acting on the
principle of promiscuous admission to the Lord’s table, were coming
irregularly without having acquainted the minister, or giving evidence
that they were prepared for the observance of that holy ordinance.
Guthrie addressed them when leaving their pews to come to the table,
with such gravity, resolution and zeal that they were quite confounded,
and sat down again, without causing any further disturbance.
— John Whitecross, 1828
Shorter Catechism Scriptures But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and
drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth
and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
— 1 Corinthians 11:28, 29 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith: prove your own selves:
know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye
be reprobates?
— 2 Corinthians 13:5 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are
unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore
let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of
malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and
truth. — 1 Corinthians 5:7, 8
Next week
we recite Shorter Catechism Q. 98:
What is prayer?
A. Prayer is an offering up
of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to His will, in the
name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful
acknowledgment of His mercies.
The Shorter Catechism class that meets at 9 each Sabbath morning is for adults and teenagers wishing to begin a systematic basic study. New students may begin at any time, but currently the class is just starting at the beginning of the catechism. The catechism is beneficial to study because it presents in a summarized way the basic teachings of the Bible, particularly those most necessary for a coherent understanding of the faith.
